Odorant receptors: Axon contact-mediated diversity
نویسنده
چکیده
To make the most of a small number of neurons, the nematode olfactory system includes neurons that are bilaterally symmetrical in morphology, but differ in the sets of genes they express. An intriguing recent example is the axon contact-mediated asymmetry in expression of the str-2 odorant receptor gene.

Odorant receptors in the formation of the olfactory bulb circuitry.
In mammals, smell is mediated by odorant receptors expressed by sensory neurons in the nose. These specialized receptors are found both on olfactory sensory neurons' cilia and axon terminals. Although the primary function of ciliary odorant receptors is to detect odorants, their axonal role remains unclear but is thought to involve axon guidance. This review discusses findings that show axonal ...
متن کاملThe Antiquity of Chordate Odorant Receptors Is Revealed by the Discovery of Orthologs in the Cnidarian Nematostella vectensis
In vertebrates, olfaction is mediated by several families of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) including odorant receptors (ORs). In this study, we investigated the antiquity of OR genes by searching for amino acid motifs found in chordate ORs among the protein predictions from 12 nonchordate species. Our search uncovered a novel group of genes in the cnidarian Nematostella vectensis. Phyloge...
متن کاملLateral Signaling Mediated by Axon Contact and Calcium Entry Regulates Asymmetric Odorant Receptor Expression in C. elegans
C. elegans detects several odorants with the bilaterally symmetric pair of AWC olfactory neurons. A stochastic, coordinated decision ensures that the candidate odorant receptor gene str-2 is expressed in only one AWC neuron in each animal--either the left or the right neuron, but never both. An interaction between the two AWC neurons generates asymmetric str-2 expression in a process that requi...
متن کاملDiversity and expression of odorant receptors in Drosophila
Olfactory perception translates abstract chemical features of odorants into meaningful neural information to elicit appropriate behavioral responses (Shepherd, 1994; Buck, 1996). Specialized bipolar olfactory sensory neurons (OSNs) are responsible for the initial events in odor recognition. These have ciliated dendrites exposed to the environment, and a single axon that extends into the brain a...
متن کاملAxon Guidance of Mouse Olfactory Sensory Neurons by Odorant Receptors and the β2 Adrenergic Receptor
Odorant receptors (ORs) provide the core determinant of identity for axons of olfactory sensory neurons (OSNs) to coalesce into glomeruli in the olfactory bulb. Here, using gene targeting in mice, we examine how the OR protein determines axonal identity. An OR::GFP fusion protein is present in axons, consistent with a direct function of ORs in axon guidance. When the OR coding region is deleted...
